Change Bricks URLs to print on your browser.

Ever run into a link that someone has posted that is the actual "bricks" URL (not the website it was extracted from) and you can't print it? Wanna know why? It's because they extracted it on a computer that was using an internet browser which is NOT the one you're currently using.

Can you fix that?
Apparently you can. There are two little letters inside a bricks URL that tell the bricks if you are on Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari on a Mac (like me). Most bloggers seem to be on PCs, so for me running into a coupon I want to print from someone's blog link was always frustrating. Now, from tracking down comments on several blogs, I've figured out how to change the URL in my browser to be the one I want and VOILA I can print the coupon.

Internet Explorer on a PC Bricks:

Firefox on a PC Bricks:

Safari on a Mac Bricks:

Find a link you can't print, look at the url. Change those two letters (that I've identified in the above URL) to wi or vi for Internet Explorer, wg or vg for Firefox, and xs for Safari, and it should print. (For the either or choices, try one and if it doesn't work try the other) I tested it out on a coupon link I couldn't print before, and just printed it. Wendi first blogged about this issue here, but I've added more two-letter options. So, thanks Wendi, I found your post AFTER I struggled to decode this and wrote THIS post! Wish I'd found you sooner.

I feel like I just found gold and conquered my html-challenged inadequacies both. I hope you found this information helpful. Please forward it to your coupon printing friends so that they may reap the rewards of their new found coupon gold! And, please comment on this post if this works for you, or if it doesn't and requires further research!

Thank you so much! I work on a mac and was so frustrated that I couldn't print so many coupons from links. Just tried the "xs" for safari and it worked!
Thanks again.

Any idea how to fix the Java one to be able to print the SmartSource coupons? It does not recognize my printer as the default printer but I can print other coupons and the default printer is fine.

Ann, I'm sorry I don't know how to fix that. I'll look around and see if I can find someone who has posted about that!

This still isn't working for me. It just shows the two printer images, printing my coupon but nothing is printing. It does this for a long time. I use firefox and changed both urls, as you said. I can't print from coupons.com (says I haven't installed the coupon printer even though I have many many times), but I can print from smartsource.com. Any suggestions?

hi Devon, well, that stinks huh. When I try to print coupons.com coupons, and I am on Safari, I also get the message that says I haven't installed the printer. However, when I click on the green button in the bottom right that says print, after about 4 more times of getting that screen, it finally "takes" and prints. Try that. If that doesn't work, try using another browser like Internet Explorer and using the bricks code for that one.

Sorry, I've never had that happen. I am interested in what circumstances result in this problem. Anybody?

Hi Dukeman,
For instance, a blogger who is working on a PC and using an IE browser, posts a link to a coupon that starts with "bricks". This means it's a direct-to-print coupon. And, they're copying the URL from THEIR browser, which may not be your browser. Since I am on Mac, I have run into this alot. I just change those two letters, and now the URL recognizes my Safari browser on Mac, and the coupon prints. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. One thing I hate about direct-to-print coupons is that they don't allow me to set the printer settings. I don't use color ink so many of those coupons won't print properly, since I can't set the "print color as black" option in the printer settings. Unfortunately my printer software won't keep this as a global setting. Almost makes you wonder if these companies are in cahoots with the printer ink barons. There, I've vented!
