Check with your local store before shopping to confirm YOUR store's coupon policy. Make a wheel barrow at Home Depot.

The free kids craft at Home Depot this month a little wheel barrow, which I think headless Spiderman and headless Batman, along with one-legged Hulk will enjoy using to tote your colored golf ball collection around in, Luka. And you can build it yourself using your favorite of all tools–The hammer!

Please go to Home Depot promptly between 9:00am and 12:00pm on Saturday, May 2nd. (Preferably for as long as possible) Bring daddy. Since you can't drive and all. Stop for donuts or maybe Sonic Tater Tots on the way. (Don't forget to bring mommy home a breakfast burrito.) Remember to swing by the park and run some laps with your wheel barrow. The economy hits MY home. With a bulldozer.

This week, someone, who obviously has not figured out how to get everything for free at Walgreens, drove a bulldozer thru the front window of MY neighborhood Walgreens. MY WALGREENS, people. I was just there hours before it happened. They left their bulldozer, but took the ATM machine. Read the story here. Thank God all the marked-down chocolate was not touched.

Then, just last night, someone, who obviously needs to look inside bags before running off with them (otherwise they wouldn't bother) broke into my dear husband's car IN OUR DRIVEWAY and took his Softball Bag with his grubby bats, dirty softballs, well-worn gloves and stinky cleats. (He is the coach.) They took his Handball Bag with his 20 pairs of stinky handball gloves, his stinky handball court shoes, his handballs, goggles, handball shirts and his locker for the Y. They took Hurricane Luka's baby golf putter (that my sweet neighbor Beth handed down to Quinn and Luka). He was very attached to his golf putter. And a package of diapers (for emergency diaper changes at museums in Fort Worth usually). And his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes ballcap. The good news is they left all his CDs, apparently Leonard Cohen, Elliott Smith, Zero7, and Diana Krall were not to their liking.

I am not shocked by the desperation that drives people to steal diapers. But a baby's golf putter? Stinky handball gloves? These things will mean nothing and be worth nothing to the people that took them. But they represented decades of my husband's hard work toward being a handball champion, and decades of his volunteerism as a softball coach. And the bulldozer drivers? My husband took that one personally too, as it was one of his city projects to get that Walgreens built in our neighborhood a few years ago. He is a city employee who tries his best to work to build neighborhoods into places we all want to live and shop and walk around with our children. 

What can we do? Please reach out to your co-workers, neighbors, relatives and friends and share how to get any freebies you come across, an extra box of cereal you scored. A pack of diapers. Show them how to "do" Walgreens and CVS. Invite people over to dinner. Let's keep each other from getting to this level of desperation. Stick together people.

Mother's Day for single mothers.

There is something I'd like for you to do for me. Look around you, in  your neighborhood, at work, somewhere in your life, and you will find a single mother. This mother will most likely not be getting a fancy meal out on May 10. This mother will most likely not be getting a bouquet of flowers, a piece of jewelry, or a box of chocolates. She may not even get a card. I know, because I have been this mother.

What's in the paper? Week of 4.26 - 5.2

How do I get really cheap groceries?I use a coupon with a product only when it goes on sale. Period. Often, matching up a coupon with a sale price can score some free or almost free groceries. Having multiples of a coupon then, allows you to stockpile something that you would perhaps use several of over the next few months now for a rock-bottom price. Here's a simple example of this practice. (I've got a mini-mart in my attic that I keep stocked.) Now I only spend a minimal amount of money weekly on non-perishable items like fruit and milk and bread, and then cherry pick free deals to keep my stockpile stocked.

Why do you want this week's paper? In multiples even. If you live in Oak Cliff, Dallas, TX, get multiples this way. If you don't live in Dallas, you can simply order multiples of just the coupons you want at Coupon Clippers (Click on the little blue box on my right hand margin. For just a few pennies per coupon, you can get multiples! I've done this many times.) I love to keep my coupon binder stocked. You can build a great coupon binder too, start here.
